(U-WIRE) SAN DIEGO -- The project started out innocently enough when documentary filmmaker Joe Berlinger phoned Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. Metallica, the trailblazing heavy metal outfit with more records sold than any other band the past 10 years, was going into the studio to record its first full-length album since 1997's "Reload."

The idea: Shoot a promo video during a transitional period for the group, as the band would start the session without disgruntled and departed 15-year bassist Jason Newsted, who left the band in 2001 to pursue his own side projects, namely with the band Echobrain, after frustrations that he couldn't pursue his artistic interests while stile playing with Metallica. In addition, at the request of its management company, Q-Prime, Metallica was to sit down with therapist Phil Towle to smooth over any intrinsic speedbumps, with the hopes that the band could indeed get an album out and benefit all that had a vested interest.

The plan was to shoot a behind-the-music for the world's biggest metal band -- possibly to regain fans lost in the Napster backlash of 2000, which included Ulrich testifying before the U.S. Congress -- to stir interest in the new album. The band rented out the Presidio in San Francisco, and turned the former military barracks into a make-shift studio. They wanted to document a band like its members were coming together for the first time, only that band happened to be Metallica.

Needless to say, it didn't quite work out. What started out structured was too much suffocation for Metallica's creative aggression. What resulted in what would become the film "Some Kind of Monster" never did intend to be the beast it grew into, but the sum of the parts and the release of the band's album, "St. Anger," dictated it as thus. The film at its most stripped shows the making of an album for an insanely popular band. What happens when the world's biggest heavy metal band grows up? Can 40-year-olds with kids, wives and separate lives, entrenched in their at-times stubborn ways, put egos aside to collaborate on an album like they could in their mid-20s? Did they still have the energy and drive? Had they seen too much of the road, the fame and the money to swallow their collective pride?

It didn't appear so. At one point, Hetfield leaves the band for over six months to check himself into rehab, and the film project, as well as the album and the band's future, looked bleak. Luckily for Metallica, the directors filming the promo consisted on the continuance of filming the project, and they were none other than documentary film wonders Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, the team that created critically acclaimed documentaries "Brother's Keeper" and "Paradise Lost." (The two actually met the band through "Paradise Lost," in which Metallica supplied much of the music.) And, luckily for the directors, Metallica had the courage to stick to the project through creative spats in therapy sessions to frontman Hetfield's six-month leave to getting an album out and finally finding a new bassist. They were committed to making the film.

Hetfield does come back and the album, as well as the film, gets ultimately completed with the finality of it all. Metallica's nakedness in peak times for the creative process has to be admired.

The film itself took on its own form of transformation. At one point when Hetfield was on his hiatus, the record company wanted to spew it out and make it into a here-what-the-band's-been-doing piece. Then, the studio wanted to release it as an "Osbournes"-type reality knock-off when the Hetfield returned and the album was complete, but Metallica believed in the Berlinger/Sinofsky team. So the triumvirate purchased the rights to the film thus far from the recording studio, which all totaled put them back $4 million.

"These guys are risk takers. Always have been, always will be," Sinofsky said. "The very fact that they allowed us to make the film and would be willing to show their fan base, their millions of fans, warts and all, going through therapy, not being the tough, macho guys you've been seeing for the last 20 years. It takes incredible risk."

Berlinger added, "How much courage does it take to, first of all, tell your record label to f--- off in this age of declining record sales and downloading to say, 'You know what, we don't want this great promotional vehicle to sell records, we want to do what's right for this project.' B) To let it be filmed, to then pay for it, then to say, 'You know what, we're going to let these guys make the film that they want to make' and we're going to pay for it, and then to let it out the way it is."

Blown away by the band's generosity, the directors keep shooting and delve deeper into band issues. There's even a part where Joe and Bruce come into the picture and Hetfield admits that the combination of initially being forced to churn out lyrics while having the camera on and the boom hovering overhead at the Presidio was not conducive to his creative environment needs.

"James got into the swing of it when we had the opportunity to show him like 10 minutes of some rusted scenes," Sinofsky said. "He understood where we were going and what we were trying to do. I think he was surprised by it. And when he analyzed and thought about it he came back to us and said, 'If anything, you guys need to go deeper. You have to be more honest and more truthful.'"

"Really for James, one of the things that drove him into therapy was he felt this burden of being the frontman for Metallica, not letting people know who he really is, and like you feel in the film it was like a beast," says Berlinger. "The film allows him to show people who he is and if the fans want to stomp all over him after he shows them then that's their prerogative, but at least now he's able to communicate with people because he has such difficulty getting close to people."

Also of particular interest is the band's sit-downs with therapist Phil Towle, who is there to more or less smooth over the sweltering egos of the stubborn Hetfield and the artsy Ulrich. It shows three very real rock gods stripped of their stadium crowds and mountains of amps and places them in silence to talk about artistic power struggles between three people. These occasionally turn into frustrated shouting matches between James and Lars, who can't seem to compromise enough to keep the band plugging along. As part of James' rehab, he can only work from noon to 4 p.m., so he can set aside designated family time. This doesn't bode well for Lars, as James asks him not to listen to cuts with producer Bob Rock when James walks out the door. Hetfield feels like he's being left out when music is being made behind his back, while Ulrich feels like he's a big enough boy to listen to whatever he wants whenever he wants. These scenes come off as childish and comedic. It's a bickering power struggle of rock god proportion. At one point, the band sits down with former guitarist Dave Mustaine, who was kicked out of the band in 1983 and would go on to form rival metal group Megadeth. The encounter is as emotional as the film gets, with Mustaine letting Ulrich know the anguish he has lived with since leaving the band, and wishing it was still 1983.

For fans that have seen the shows, bought the merch and grown up banging their heads to "Enter Sandman" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls," they won't see the band in the same way. You see Metallica as real people with real pressures and real expectations of their personal lives, each other and the direction of a band that helped to create a genre. Ulrich has his collection of priceless art, Hammett has his ranch in Northern California and Hetfield has his family, hunting and soapbox derby car.

As Lars has said about the film, "It's not a film about Metallica, it's a film about relationships." Fans may find Metallica as selfish whiners who do nothing but bicker and bitch at one another, but the power struggles are very real and uncensored. The film offers a look into who controls what goes into in the creation of a Metallica album. You find out how a simple-enough sounding project as making an album can take its own shape and be turned into something very different.

METALLICA have set a July 9 theatrical release date for their much-anticipated $4-million documentary, "Some Kind of Monster". The film is initially expected to be released in small theaters in such cities as New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, with plans to show the movie in other U.S. markets by the fall.

Joe Berlinger, who directed the movie along with Bruce Sinofsky, had previously said that "Some Kind of Monster" will hit VHS and DVD early next year in what is likely to be two editions: a double-disc set composed of the movie and plenty of bonus footage, and a four-disc box featuring the movie plus as much as four and a half hours of edited footage that didn't make the film. There's also a good possibility that a soundtrack will accompany the DVD release, Berlinger said, adding that it would likely feature songs recorded during sessions that were left off "St. Anger".

As previously reported, METALLICA have struck a service deal with IFC Pictures in which the band will pick up all the marketing costs in order to control distribution of the film.
