_________________________________________________________
DW: A lot of fans have been complaining about the sound of Death Magnetic, claiming the album "clips," almost as if the album was mixed to loud.
LU: To me, the clipping isn't that evident. We wanted this album to be fucking loud and in your face. Producing Death Magnetic like The Black Album for example, wouldn't have allowed us to do that. We make albums the way we want to make them, and I think at the end of the day we really accomplished what we wanted to do with this album.
DW: There has been a lot of comments about what is happening with the songs that didn't make the album. How many actual completed songs were left off the album, and are we ever going to get to hear them?
LU: Well, there were 4 actual completed songs that were left off the album and then there was a lot more other songs that we didn't even bother finishing, either because they didn't fit well with the other songs on Death Magnetic or because we lost interest in them. In regards to what's going to be happening with the unreleased completed songs, I really don't think we're going to release them any time soon. Maybe some day after all this is finished, after Metallica is gone, in some sort of box set with our other unreleased songs or something. But even then I don't know if that's going to end up happening so don't hold you breath for them.
DW: Compared to your past albums where most of the songs were credited Hetfield/Ulrich, this album's songs are credited with every member of the band. What was it like listening to everyone's ideas in regards to arrangements and really listening to each other's riffs and ideas this time around?
LU: The arrangements/ideas part of the songs on Death Magnetic are still very much to do with me and James. We basically wrote this album very much like the old days, where me and James would go and listen to heaps of riff tapes and go from there. The thing that was different this time around though, was that we tried very hard to get at least one riff by Kirk and Rob on every song, so that we could all share the credits, which I think turned out to be a very special thing.
DW: Right now you guys are on tour and are playing a lot of material off Death Magnetic. What has it been like playing the new stuff and do you plan to continue playing your new material?
LU: It's been a lot of fun playing the new stuff. We're very proud of the songs we've made. All the songs off this album will be played live by the time the World Magnetic tour is over, with the exception of Suicide and Redemption, we're still contemplating on playing that. We're expecting this tour to go on till early 2010, although we won't be touring the entire time like in the old days. We're going to be taking breaks so there's still time to hang out with our families and such. But there will still be plenty of time to debut each song off Death Magnetic live.
DW: Where would you rank Death Magnetic among your other albums?
LU: (Laughs) I don't really go back and rank our past albums, although if I had to have a favourite album by us, I'd say it would be Kill 'em All, purely for the memories it brings and the aggression and attitude we showed on that album. I'm really digging Death Magnetic because it almost sums up everything that's happened in Metallica musically. It's got some fast shit, heavy shit, slow shit and everything in between. It's the Metallica of the 80's meets the Metallica of the early 90's. There's even a few Load moments on the album with The Unforgiven III. That's what I'm really proud of, the fact that we made an album that has so many different elements from our previous albums mixed with some new elements, yet it flows so well.
DW: A final question about Death Magnetic. Which song did you most enjoy recording/writing for Death Magnetic? Which song are you most proud of?
LU: It's quite interesting you ask that question. There was one song that I fucking loved that didn't make the album. It was this big heavy number, one of the heaviest songs we had written in a long time, if not the heaviest. I thought this album needed a slow, sludgy sort of heavy song, similar to The Thing That Should Not Be. That's the only thing I think is missing on this album that would have made it perfect. I was really proud of it. The number seven spot on the album was basically between this song and The Unforgiven III. Me, Rob and Kirk all really wanted this song on the album, even though we really loved The Unforgiven III as well. We all agreed that one ballad on the album (The Day That Never Comes) was enough. James however argued and argued with us, saying that The Unforgiven III needed to be on the album. He wouldn't let down and eventually we just let him have it. Now that I think about that question you asked before about what's happening with the songs that didn't make the album, I really would love to have this song released, if only
to show the fans and see what they think of it. I think they would love it just as much as I do. |
